Call for Applications from Quebec English-language Writers
DEADLINE: November 21, 2018
The QWF Mentorship program is designed to help promising emerging writers make the transition to the next stage of their careers. Over a period of four months, mentors are expected to devote 35 to 40 hours to reading and responding to their protégé’s work and giving guidance towards the goal of publication or production. Protégés are expected to commit a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per month to the program. Remuneration for mentors is $1500.
This program is intended for Quebec residents who do not have other resources at hand for professional mentorship. As such, students currently in writing programs and authors working with a professional editor/publisher are not eligible for this program. Nor are those who have already had a QWF mentorship. All participants must be QWF members in good standing as of February 1, 2019.
Both mentors and protégés will be selected by an independent jury. There is no guarantee that all genres will be included in the final pairings. Depending on geographical location, some of the Quebec mentorships may also be conducted primarily by email, Skype and telephone.
Writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry or young adult literature with at least one book published by a recognized professional publisher or an equivalent professional level of achievement, and playwrights or screenwriters with at least one full-length professional production are eligible to apply. Dramaturgs need not have had a play published, but must have professional credentials. Teaching or mentoring experience is a plus.
To apply for the mentorship program, prepare the document described below and then submit your application, which must include the following components combined into a single WORD document:
- a one-page bio listing your publications/productions, outlining your teaching experience, and listing the genres/disciplines on which you are qualified to advise;
- a short description of your approach to mentoring;
- a declaration of your availability during the period December 1, 2018 – June 15, 2019. (If selected for the program, you will receive applications from the shortlisted candidates in your genre in late November or early December and be asked to rank your choices within a short timeframe. The actual mentoring takes place from February 1 to May 31, 2019, with a public reading to be scheduled in early June 2019.)
Please be sure to indicate the genre(s) you would be willing to mentor in. You can check more than one genre.
If you cannot submit online, you may drop off or mail a copy of the document described above, along with your complete contact information to:
