Call for Applications from Quebec English-language Writers

DEADLINE: Sunday, November 8, 2020 @ 11:59 p.m. EST

The QWF Mentorship program is designed to help promising emerging writers make the transition to the next stage of their careers. Over a period of four months, mentors are expected to devote 35 to 40 hours to reading and responding to their protégé’s work and giving guidance towards the goal of publication or production. Protégés are expected to commit a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per month to the program. Remuneration for mentors is $1500. The only cost to protégés is a $25 CAD non-refundable application fee.

This program is intended for Quebec residents who do not have other resources at hand for professional mentorship. As such, students currently in writing programs and authors working with a professional editor/publisher are not eligible for this program. Nor are those who have already had a QWF mentorship. All participants must be QWF members in good standing as of February 1, 2021.

Both mentors and protégés will be selected by an independent jury. There is no guarantee that all genres will be included in the final pairings. Depending on geographical location, some of the Quebec mentorships may also be conducted primarily by email, Skype and telephone.

The Mairuth Sarsfield Mentorship for Underrepresented Writers
(part of the QWF "Fresh Pages" Initiative)
If you are Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Colour you may be eligible for The Mairuth Sarsfield Mentorship, launching this year as part of the QWF "Fresh Pages" Initiative. This program is designed to create opportunities for promising writers and playwrights who, because of their ethnic or racial profile, have faced systemic and/or financial barriers to engaging in professional development activities. The QWF's goal is to give a select group of literary artists additional training, skills, and professional credentials to help level the playing field and improve their career opportunities.

To Apply FOR a Mentor
Emerging writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays, screenplays, and young adult fiction or non-fiction are invited to apply to be mentored by an established author over a period of four months (approximately March 1, 2021 to June 30, 2021). You should also be available for a public reading in Montreal in June. There is a $25 CAD non-refundable submission fee.

To apply for the mentorship program, prepare the document described below and submit. Be prepared to pay the submission fee by credit card or PayPal.

Your application must include the following two components combined into a single WORD document that does NOT have your name or other identifying material anywhere in it (don’t worry—we will receive your name and contact information):

  1. a one-page pitch telling which genre you are applying in, where you are in your development as a writer, and how your writing will benefit from a mentor’s guidance;
  2. an eight- to ten-page sample, double-spaced if prose, from the project you wish to work on. No more than ten pages will be forwarded to the jury. Do not put your name on this document

 Please also be sure to use the checkbox to indicate which genre you are writing in. You may check more than one genre.

If you cannot submit online, you may mail a copy of the document described above, along with your contact information on a separate sheet, and a $35 CAD cheque made out to “QWF” to:
